Rain'S Drum

RAIN'S DRUM

We had to do a bit of detective work with this old and unique piece. It was bought in the Nepalese antique market with little explanation. We believe that it is a statue of Indra, the Hindu God of Heaven, who is summoned by pounding a drum. Once he is called, he brings on the monsoon rains, which are critical for an agrarian society like Nepal. The end of the monsoon is celebrated with the Festival of Indrajatra, during which the Nepalese give thanks to Indra for his largesse. We have attended Indrajatra several times, and it is a most exciting and exotic spectacle. The exact age of the statue is unknown, but we estimate it to be between fifty and one hundred years old. Please note that Tradewinds does not clean or polish any of our old and rare pieces, because cleaning may devalue these old pieces of art. Brass, discovered in Nepal.
