Nepalese Dowry Necklace

Nepalese Dowry Necklace

NEPALESE DOWRY NECKLACE

This necklace is a proud piece of Nepalese history. in Nepal, custom has always dictated that women must present their husband a dowry when they marry. The dowry necklace has become a traditional means of safeguarding those assets. Dowry necklaces are made of coins, to which little metal circles have been added. The coins are strung together, on string or cloth, and they are worn every day. This particular necklace is mostly made of Nepalese Ruipee coins. One side displays the kukri knife (the national symbol), and the other has the Hindu God Shiva's trident (a symbol of his power) The dates on these coins are not known. This necklace is strung in the traditional style. My guess is that it has been restrung many times over the years. Some of the original coins have been replaced with newer ones. Note that Tradewinds never cleans old items, because cleaning may reduce the antique value. We leave all cleaning to the discretion of the collector. PLEASE BE AWARE: WE DO NOT KNOW THE METAL CONTENT OF THESE PIECES! They are genuinely old. They are most likely NOT sterling silver. If they cause allergic reaction, please wear them over your clothes.
