Holy Fire

Fire is elemental in Hinduism, and the fire god Agni will transport all prayers to the heavens in his flames. Every night there is a spectacular puja, or prayer session, on the banks of the Ganges.

Sadhus

The sadhus are holy men who wander India to meditate in sacred spots. They congregate on the steps ( ghats) that border the river. AS penniless mendicants, they rely on alms for their existence.

Puja

Incense, like fire, is seen as a purifier. The Egyptians used it, and it spread from there to India, China and beyond. It is believed to attract the attention of the gods.

Prayer by the Ganges

The broad sweep of the Ganges and the ancient city are the backdrop for a pilgrim receiving teachings. His guru was a surprisingly young man, but one who exuded ancient wisdom.

Moment of Meditation

This stately holy man was in a moment of quiet meditation in the morning sun. How many generations have imbude this spot with a sense of snactity ?

Devotee

This is the face of a man at peace with life, inevitable death and endless reincarnation. Penniless and shorn of possesions, he strives to attain a higher understanding.

Eternal River

The Ganges flows from the glaciers of the Himalayas, the abode of the gods. It is the mother of India, spawning an ageless civilization. Unfortunately, it is under great environmental stress.

Bicycle Sadhu

Chaos and sanctity, peacefulness and cacaphony, inner peace and outer stimulation. A local sadhu heads off on his daily commute through the insane streets of Varanasi.
